Book Review: From Blood and Ash by Jennifer L.Armentrout, Blood and Ash #1
Before you read, be warned there are a couple of spoilers!
I'm not sure why I was so surprised at how much I adore this book, considering The Harbinger series by the same author is one of my favourites! I've seen a lot of hype on booksta about this book, which always makes me excited but a little nervous. I've definitely suffered from over-hype before, and I was worried I'd be disappointed by this book when I'd really been looking forward to reading it for a long time. I can happily say that it lived up to all of my expectations!
Ok, so firstly, Poppy. I love her! I can't help but fall in love with strong and resilient female leads, and especially ones who do so despite the consequences to themselves. Living your life as the Maiden sounds horrendous, having every single action and decision dictated for you. And what she has to go through, enduring the Duke's "lessons" is something no one should ever have to experience. And yet, even knowing how severely she will be punished if caught, Poppy continues to defy her rules to help others, which I find to be a very admirable trait. Also, wearing that veil all the time sounds like a royal pain in the butt!
Obviously, I'm in love with Hawke and am secretly devastated that he doesn't exist! I had an inkling that he wasn't who he said he was, but I definitely wasn't expecting him to be Prince Casteel! I have to say, I would have given him a way harder time than Poppy did over all the lies he told, even if he is gorgeous and swoon worthy. Despite all of that, you can tell how much he cares about her, so I'm keeping all my fingers crossed that they work it out in book two.
Everything about this book was exciting and made my heart ache, and I could not recommend it enough! I'll be diving into book two ASAP after that cliffhanger ending!
Read the summary below:
Chosen from birth to usher in a new era, Poppy’s life has never been her own. The life of the Maiden is solitary. Never to be touched. Never to be looked upon. Never to be spoken to. Never to experience pleasure. Waiting for the day of her Ascension, she would rather be with the guards, fighting back the evil that took her family, than preparing to be found worthy by the gods. But the choice has never been hers.
The entire kingdom’s future rests on Poppy’s shoulders, something she’s not even quite sure she wants for herself. Because a Maiden has a heart. And a soul. And longing. And when Hawke, a golden-eyed guard honor bound to ensure her Ascension, enters her life, destiny and duty become tangled with desire and need. He incites her anger, makes her question everything she believes in, and tempts her with the forbidden.
Forsaken by the gods and feared by mortals, a fallen kingdom is rising once more, determined to take back what they believe is theirs through violence and vengeance. And as the shadow of those cursed draws closer, the line between what is forbidden and what is right becomes blurred. Poppy is not only on the verge of losing her heart and being found unworthy by the gods, but also her life when every blood-soaked thread that holds her world together begins to unravel.
