Book Review: Heartless by Marissa Meyer

I'm a sucker for a good fairytale style retelling and I was so excited to read one about the Queen of Hearts' backstory!

Firstly, I loved how all the favourite Alice in Wonderland characters cropped up in this, each with their own storylines pre-dating the AiW timeline. The descriptions in this book are beautiful; you feel as if you are in Hearts yourself, eating Catherine's exquisite pastries and attending Hatter's tea party in all it's galore (before he goes mad, that is). The author is incredible at really setting the scene for this story to take place.

What disappointed me slightly with this book was the pace. I'm a very demanding reader - I want the story to be exciting all the time, and can drift off quite easily if it isn't. However, once the action started I was hooked, and got through the remainder of the book very quickly!

I really liked how the story ended. You know going into this book that Catherine is going to turn into the cruel and ruthless Queen of Hearts, but it's hard to wrap your head around whilst reading as she's such a compassionate and caring character. By the end of the story, her heart is taken and she becomes the cold Queen we expect to see, giving a very interesting character arc.

Overall, I enjoyed this story. If the beginning had had a little more pace it would have been a 4 star read for me.

Read the summary below:

Catherine may be one of the most desired girls in Wonderland, and a favorite of the unmarried King of Hearts, but her interests lie elsewhere. A talented baker, all she wants is to open a shop with her best friend. But according to her mother, such a goal is unthinkable for the young woman who could be the next queen.

Then Cath meets Jest, the handsome and mysterious court joker. For the first time, she feels the pull of true attraction. At the risk of offending the king and infuriating her parents, she and Jest enter into an intense, secret courtship. Cath is determined to define her own destiny and fall in love on her terms. But in a land thriving with magic, madness, and monsters, fate has other plans.
