Book Review: The Shadows Between Us by Tricia Levenseller
Full disclosure, I wasn't too enthusiastic to pick this book up. I have no idea why, as I've had so many people tell me how great this book is, but nonetheless I ended up putting it off for a bit longer than I originally intended, and I'm annoyed at myself for it!
Alessandra is so fierce. She starts off very cold and calculating, as a result of always being overshadowed and judged by her family. She wants to make a name for herself, without any help from her father who has never seen her worth, and her sister who looks down on her, which is completely understandable. She is intelligent and capable and not afraid to be herself and I kind of wish I could be her! As she gets to know Kallias, she gradually sheds her defences and lets other people in.
One thing that I dislike about YA is the cheesy and unrealistic relationships. An amazing book can be ruined from that for me, and I am so so grateful that wasn't the case here! The development Alessandra and Kallias' relationship was so natural and it just felt right.
I also did not guess the twist! It caught me completely off guard and really wrapped the story together well.
I would so love for there to be a sequel, but at the same time, there's always the worry that it won't live up to the first book. Regardless, I'll definitely be reading more books by this author soon.
Read the summary below:
Alessandra is tired of being overlooked, but she has a plan to gain power:
1) Woo the Shadow King.
2) Marry him.
3) Kill him and take his kingdom for herself.
No one knows the extent of the freshly crowned Shadow King’s power. Some say he can command the shadows that swirl around him to do his bidding. Others say they speak to him, whispering the thoughts of his enemies. Regardless, Alessandra knows what she deserves, and she’s going to do everything within her power to get it.
But Alessandra’s not the only one trying to kill the king. As attempts on his life are made, she finds herself trying to keep him alive long enough for him to make her his queen—all while struggling not to lose her heart. After all, who better for a Shadow King than a cunning, villainous queen?
